By Pablo Picasso
1956
Technique: Oil on canvas
Size: 890 mm x 1160 mm
Picasso moved to the Villa La Californie in Cannes, south France in 1955 and lived there with his second wife, Jacqueline Roque.
On the day of April 18, 1956, Picasso made 3 paintings and 2 lithographs based on the theme of a man sitting with a woman lying next to him. This is one of those three paintings, and depicts a couple nestled together on the seashore. They are extremely simplified human forms and it is painted with very limited use of colors; the color scheme of simple lines and blue tones gives the viewer the atmosphere of an expansive seashore.

By Pablo Picasso
1959
Technique: Oil on canvas
Size: 650 mm x 810 mm
In 1958, Picasso bought the Chateau of Vauvenargues in Aix-en-Provence, and used it as his studio. The still life paintings he did in this period are characterized by their simple forms and harmonious colors.
In this piece, a mandolin, jug, and a glass, which Picasso often used as a motif, are drawn with a light brush before a background of deep green and black. From around 1947, Picasso started making pottery, and it is thought that it is one of the jugs he made, with an image of the Roman god Faunus drawn on it, depicted here.

By Wataru Kawashima
Technique: Japanese-style painting
Size: 1850 mm x 2300 mm
This piece is drawn from the viewpoint of someone looking down from a high position upon a streetscape where old buildings are pressed together along a gently curving road.
The reddish brown of each roof tile is drawn in detail on the rooves, and the green and brown colors over the white walls give them texture, expressing the history of the buildings. While there are no people to be seen, light leaks out of several open windows giving a feeling of humanity and warmth of those living there. The subdued colors and rich materials poetically express the feeling of a quiet town where time passes slowly.

By Paul Aizpiri
Techquie: Oil painting
Size: 2000 mm x 2500 mm
One of the motifs that Aizpiri enjoyed painting was the landscape of Cannes in southern France.
The bustling feeling and fun of a luxury resort is expressed in this simplified picture by combining lightly blended blues, oranges, yellows, and purples with bright colors with a rich black contour line. This work is full of Aizpiri’s unique playful spirit with spheres in the sky filled with people and animals, and propellers with flags flying about.

By Edgar Degas
1901
Technique: Pastel, paper
Size: 540 mm x 340 mm

Degas, famous for his paintings that depict dancers, wasn’t limited to the theatre and stage, but drew his source material from scenes of dancers practicing as well, and became popular as a specialist in depicting ballet.
The massive number of sketches left by Degas reveal that he repeatedly studied individual poses and his natural depiction of the momentary movements of dancers were the result of countless repeated repetitions and practice.
In this sketch, the dancer is drawn with a sense of bulk, with bold and powerful lines. We have no idea of the expression on the model’s face, and that shows how focused Degas’s interest was on the bodily movements.
